  • Schönbrunn Palace – A Royal Mix of Glamour, Gardens and Giraffes

Just a hop from the Vienna Garden Bungalow and boom – you’re standing in front of a real imperial residence. Schönbrunn Palace isn’t just a name you vaguely remember from school – it’s a place that greets you with golden doors, sweeping staircases and serious wow-factor. 😍 Once home to the mighty Habsburgs and their 1,400 rooms (yes, really), today you can tour a handful of them without needing to bow or curtsy. The grand halls are like stepping into a royal Instagram filter: elegant, oversized and almost too perfect to be true. If you love chandeliers, gold trimmings and wondering “What exactly was this room for?” – you’re in the right place. ✨ Schönbrunn Palace But there’s more! The baroque gardens are a paradise for walkers, picnic lovers and anyone who secretly wants to star in a historical Netflix drama. Climb up the Gloriette hill for a view so stunning it might knock your socks off – Vienna on one side, timeless beauty on the other. 📸😄 Still not done? Good. Because the world’s oldest zoo is right in the palace grounds – with penguins, pandas and giraffes, all carrying a hint of imperial charm. 🐧🐼🦒 And if tropical vibes are your thing, the Palm House is waiting with heat, humidity and enough lush greenery to make you feel like you're on safari. 🌴 Palm house Bottom line: Schönbrunn is a royal all-rounder. History lovers, nature enthusiasts, or panda fans – everyone finds their happy place here. Just don’t forget comfy shoes. Even emperors had sore feet. 😅👟 👑 Perfect for: fans of grandeur, garden dreamers, animal lovers and everyone with a soft spot for stories from the past. 🚗 Getting to Schönbrunn from the Vienna Garden Bungalow By car: About 25 minutes , depending on traffic. By public transport: Around 40 minutes  – take a bus or S-Bahn into the city, then switch to the U4 metro line  heading to Schönbrunn .

  • St. Stephen’s Cathedral – The Moment I Saw the “Steffl” with New Eyes

Everyone knows St. Stephen’s Cathedral is Vienna’s landmark. Growing up here, I saw it a million times – but I never really  looked at it. It was just part of the background. That changed when I started welcoming guests at my Bungalow. Suddenly, people asked me things like, “What’s that pattern on the roof?” , “Can you go up the tower?” , “What’s down in the catacombs?”  – and I realized: there’s so much I didn’t know myself. Oh, and “Steffl”  – that’s what we Viennese lovingly call the cathedral. It’s a nickname derived from Saint Stephen ( Stephanus ), and it’s almost as iconic as the building itself. Steffl Now I recommend visiting the Steffl not because I’m religious or a history buff, but because it truly impresses you. The size, the light, the small details – they sneak up on you and make you stop. ✨ My personal wow-moment: The view from the North Tower . Honestly, I had no idea there was a little elevator to take you up – but once you’re there, the view over Vienna is absolutely breathtaking. At the top, you’re not only greeted with a beautiful panorama but also with a true piece of Viennese history: the Pummerin  – Austria’s largest bell and one of the biggest in Europe. It only rings on special occasions – like New Year’s Eve or Austria’s National Day – but just standing next to it is impressive. ✨ My tip: If you want to really earn your view – head for the South Tower . But be warned: 343 steps, no elevator!  It’s true Vienna cardio 💪 – definitely not for weak knees. But the reward? An incredible view across the city – and on clear days, all the way to the Schneeberg. 🔦 And then there are the catacombs.  Hidden beneath the cathedral is a whole other world – dark, quiet, and a little eerie. But I’ll save that story for the next post… 👉 And the best part?  It’s just about 20 minutes from the Vienna Garden Bungalow. So grab your camera and explore it for yourself.

  • Prater – Vienna's Candy-Floss Circus of Chaos (with a dash of "Oida")

You think it's just a Ferris wheel and a few twinkly lights? Na geh (Viennese for “oh please” or “as if”). The Wiener Prater is like a birthday party on a sugar high – with extra loopings. 🎡🎠 Here, it’s not just the roller coasters screamin’ – it’s the Gfrasta (Viennese slang for cheeky kids or mischievous troublemakers) next to you in the haunted house. And you, smack in the middle, Langos (deep-fried dough with garlic) in one hand, roasted almonds in the other, giving your best at the can toss (and failing gloriously – eh klar, meaning "obviously"). The Prater doesn’t take itself seriously – and that’s exactly why you’ll fall in love with it. If you grew up in Vienna, you know the moment: that first glimpse of the Riesenrad (Giant Ferris Wheel), thinking it touches the clouds. Mom or Dad holding your hand tight, cotton candy smell in your nose, heart racing. You're five, everything’s huge – and you wanna ride it all. Later, at 13, you sneak in with your crew. Someone screams on purpose in the ghost train. You laugh, even though you’re nearly peeing your pants. Then, hand in hand with your latest Schwarm (crush), Riesenrad at sunset. And someday, you're back again – grown-up, maybe, but with the same sparkle in your eyes. 🍭 And yes – you go back to the Topoggan. That massive, old-school wooden slide with the conveyor belt that makes you feel like an excited suitcase ready for takeoff.  😄 You get to the top, question your life choices, then fly down screaming and flapping. And of course, you go again. Because that’s just how we do it. 🛝 If you’re Viennese, you know. And if you’re not – well, you better check it out. Adrenaline junkie? Up you go on the Prater Tower – 117 metres of madness. Romantic soul? The Riesenrad at sunset, a bit of blushing, maybe a proposal next door (just politely look away). Everyone’s like: “Oooooh!” 😍 Need to chill? The Green Prater is just around the corner. Wide lawns, big old trees, and joggers with very serious faces – and you, with a Spritzer (white wine with sparkling water) in hand. That’s Viennese mindfulness. 🌳 Bottom line? The Prater is a wild ride – part chaos, part childhood, part kitsch. And afterwards, even your Bungalow wine tastes better. Maybe with some almonds. Or a fluffy unicorn. So like we say in the Prater: Heeerrrrrrreinspaziert! Grab a Langos, shake off your grown-up vibe – and off you go! 🎟️ Prater, for everyone who prefers real moments over souvenir magnets. ❤️ Praterturm

  • Between Schmarrn and Schmäh – Why Austrian Cuisine Is Actually a State of Mind

In Austria, eating isn't just an act. It's a ritual. A philosophy. A heartfelt debate over whether there's enough powdered sugar on the Kaiserschmarrn or if the Topfenstrudel should be served warm or cold. Welcome to the world of "Schmankerln," where every bite tells a story – usually seasoned with a generous sprinkle of humor and attitude. The Dessert Dynasty  🍰 Few nations give desserts such leading roles. Kaiserschmarrn? A sweet, shredded love letter to sugar. Apricot dumplings? Little culinary planets families orbit around. Palatschinken? Delicate pancakes reflecting the wild spirit of a nation. Here, sweets aren't just desserts – they're identity. Kaiserschmarrn Viennese Grump Meets Viennese Schnitzel A true Wiener Schnitzel comes from the pan, not the freezer. Golden-brown, as thin as an opera ticket, with baroque waves at the edges. Add a potato salad whispering of tarragon and nostalgia. And the waiter? A masterclass in graceful grumpiness. The Great Dumpling Diplomacy  🥔 Bread, potato or speck dumplings – Austrians pick sides. Each has its own charm: soft-hearted and sauce-soaking or bold and unbreakable. But all sit at the soul of comfort cuisine. Café Culture: Where Coffee Isn't Just Coffee  ☕ A Verlängerter isn't just a long espresso – it's a way of being. A Melange is more than a mix – it's a message. Austrian cafés are less about caffeine, more about conversation, contemplation and culture. Waiters are stern, newspapers rustle with wisdom, and the Sachertorte sits in silence. Every guest becomes part of an elegant performance. The Jause: Austria’s Culinary Intermission When hunger strikes between meals, Austria answers with Wurstbrot, Liptauer, pickles and a glass of Sturm. The Jause is not a snack – it's a declaration: I take my time. I savor. I might be stubborn, but never boring. A Shot to Finish  🥃 Apricot, plum or rowanberry – schnapps comes last. Not just for digestion, but for connection. Raise your glass, lock eyes and feel it: I belong here. Conclusion: Austrian cuisine is more than recipes. It's a lifestyle, a dialogue with the past, a playful tug-of-war between indulgence and irony. To understand it, you need time, humor, and a bit of belly. And maybe a slice of apple strudel. Just to be safe. ✨ Or better yet – experience it for yourself! Book your stay at the Vienna Garden Bungalow and immerse yourself in Austrian coziness, culture, and cuisine. 🏡💚
